Ted was born on February 28, 1925, in Lone Tree Township, near Clara City, Minnesota, the son of Theodore Sr. and Adelaide (Ennenga) Haats. When Ted was about 6 years old, the family moved towards Raymond where he lived his entire life except while serving in the Army from 1943 1946, during WW II.

On April 25, 1946, Ted was united in marriage to Christine Huisenga. He worked as a truck driver for Gunter Elevator, Duininck and Farm Service Elevator, retiring in 1988. Following his retirement, he continued to drive truck, hauling beets for his son-in-law, Doug Hultgren until 1999.
