Theresa A. Melka Aug. 5, 1935 - April 14, 2009
ATWATER -- Theresa Ann Melka, 73, of Atwater, died Tuesday at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.
The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Kandiyohi. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Atwater.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday with a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the Atwater Funeral Home and for one hour prior the service at the church. Memorials preferred to the Atwater Block Nurse Program.
She was born Aug. 5, 1935, north of Atwater to James and Myrtle (Monson) Dowdell. She grew up in rural Atwater, attended rural schools and graduated from Atwater High School in 1953. She graduated from the College of St. Catherine in 1957. She worked in Korea and Germany in the civil service for the U.S. Army.
She married Robert Melka on June 13, 1964, in Kandiyohi. They lived in St. Paul where she taught school. They later lived in Oshkosh, Wis., and Holland, Mich. She moved to Black River Falls, Wis., where she worked as a children's librarian. In 1989, she retired and returned to Atwater.
She is survived by her children: Peter Melka of Atwater, Andrew Melka of Bangkok, Thailand, and Karin (and Stephan) Lang of Guangzhou, China; two granddaughters and a sister: Marge Gruber of LeCenter.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1971, one brother and one sister.
