Following a unanimous vote Tuesday by the Kandiyohi County Board of Commissioners, Thompson will take over for Modderman, who's retiring April 27.

After interviewing Thompson last week, the commissioners agreed to name him interim auditor.

He will serve out the remainder of Modderman's unexpired term, which runs through the end of 2014.

"I look forward to working with the board," said Thompson, a 1979 graduate of Clara City High School who has a degree in business management from Bemidji State University. "I no doubt have big shoes to fill."

Modderman has worked for 40 years in the Auditor's Office, including about 25 years as an elected official.

The commissioners said they have confidence Thompson will do well in his new job.

Thompson, 50, and his wife, Colleen Thompson, have two grown daughters.

Prior to working for the county, Thompson was the office manager at Mills Auto Center.
