WILLMAR — Tires on at least 20 vehicles, and possibly as many as 30 vehicles, were slashed Saturday in parking lots and on streets near Rice Memorial Hospital.

Many of the vehicles belonged to hospital employees who discovered the vandalism as they ended their shifts.

Willmar police are investigating the incident, which is believed to have happened in broad daylight — most likely in the early- to mid-afternoon hours.

Calls started pouring into the Police Department around 3:30 p.m. Saturday and continued to around 8 p.m. when vehicle owners reported that one or more tires on their vehicles were flat.

While many had just one flat time, at least one vehicle had three flat tires, according to the initial complaint report.

Police report that it appeared the tires had been stabbed or slashed with a sharp object.

An officer reported that when he arrived on the scene, the air on one tire was still slowly leaking out, leading him to believe the incident had just occurred.

The vandalism was reported in the various parking lots belonging to the hospital as well as on Becker Avenue Southeast.

Police are reviewing hospital surveillance video of the parking lot areas but so far a suspect has not been identified.

Anyone who saw anything suspicious is asked to call the Willmar Police Department at 320-235-2244.
