A tradition of saying thanks to area veterans continues at Willmar VFW
WILLMAR — A Thanksgiving “thank you’’ to area servicemen and women remains a tradition for the Willmar Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1639 Men’s Auxiliary.
They once again put together all the fixings to serve area veterans and their families a holiday meal, according to a news release from Glen Lotthammer, president of the auxiliary.
The men’s auxiliary volunteers assembled the boxes of food on Saturday, and they were ready for distribution on Sunday.
Most of those receiving the meal boxes picked them up Sunday at the VFW on Highway 12 East. Deliveries were arranged for anyone unable to pick them up.
Kandiyohi County Veterans Service Officer Trish Appeldorn assisted the effort by sending out postcards to area veterans to let them know about the traditional thank you.
Lotthammer noted that some veterans are struggling, and this is at least a token of appreciation for their service.
Donations from area businesses including Jennie-O Turkey Store (88 turkeys), Johnson Fur/Whitefield Farms (squash and potatoes), Cash Wise Foods (cash donation and food discounts), Cub Foods (cash donation and food discounts) and Gurney’s (mixed nuts) helped make it possible. Jennie-O Turkey Store also donated turkeys to another 27 veteran organizations in Minnesota and Wisconsin, Lotthammer said in the release.
