NEW LONDON -- All ears will be perked for the sounds of gobblers come Wednesday and the start of the spring wild turkey season.

Hunters taking to the woods and fields for the start of the season have reason for optimism. Wild turkey numbers in the area are good. The early arrival of spring has made the birds active, according to LeRoy Dahlke, wildlife manager with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources office at Sibley State Park.

Dahlke said the birds have been spreading out from their winter grounds into their spring and summer haunts. The males are actively displaying and doing their courtship rituals to attract hens.

The wild turkey flock in the area saw good reproduction last year. All evidence seems to suggest the birds made it through the winter in good shape, the wildlife manager added.

He urges hunters to always be careful, and to pay special attention this year to the fire danger due to the dry conditions.

The wild turkey season runs from April 14 through May 27. Hunters are awarded licenses through a lottery system for one of eight time periods during the season.
