Two men were arrested at their home near Blackduck, Minn., last week and charged with cruelty to animals.

The Beltrami County Sheriff's Office got a call Thursday over the noon hour of a domestic dispute at a residence in Hagali Township. When deputies arrived at the scene, family members told them of the neglect of about 42 dogs found living in the home where owner Michael Bohan, 69, and James Joseph Sweeney, 42, were living.

Sweeney was arrested at the scene and jailed. Bohan was located later Thursday and arrested. Both men appeared Friday in Beltrami County court in Bemidji and were released.

Neither is allowed to return to their home except to care for the dogs each day until other arrangements can be made, according to the Sheriff's Office, which is working with the Minnesota Federated Humane Society to find suitable homes for the dogs.

Beltrami County's environmental health and emergency management departments are involved in the investigation, and the Blackduck Fire Department provided breathing apparatus for those working in the home with the dogs.
