Two Willmar natives running for mayor
WILLMAR — Two Willmar natives are now officially vying for mayor of the city: Zack Liebl and Marv Calvin.
Liebl, who announced his candidacy in December, has named Laura Larson his campaign chairwoman.
In a statement released Friday Liebl also announced his steering committee: Nicki Dyson, Kirstyn Harasyn, Roberto Valdez Jr., Beverly Dougherty, Denise Deaner, Lisa Liebl, Carrie VanderBeek and Kurt Baldwin as the campaign and volunteer manager intern.
City residents and supporters nearly filled the Willmar Fire Department meeting room Monday when Calvin made his candidacy official.
Theresa Wittenberg, executive director of the Kandiyohi County Area Family YMCA, kicked off the meeting explaining why she supports Calvin and the candidate’s wife, Ginna, introduced him.
Calvin described his career — including 12 years as Willmar fire chief — and how he believes it prepared him for the office of mayor.
When asked after his speech how he could bring about change when Willmar has a weak mayor system of government.
Calvin explained that although the system does limit the power of the office he has worked with most of the city council members. He said believes he could work with them to change the direction of city government.
