Two Willmar police officers injured in Thursday night assault
WILLMAR – Two Willmar Police Department officers were treated for injuries Thursday at Rice Memorial Hospital after being attacked and assaulted by a 23-year-old man who is now in jail on felony assault charges.
The incident happened at about 2:40 p.m. in the 800 block of 13th Street Southwest in Willmar.
According to a news release from Police Capt. Jim Felt, officers went to the residence to check for an individual wanted in Yellow Medicine County for a court order violation.
Officers found the suspect, who is identified as Cody Lee Friese, of Willmar.
Police say Friese became violent while being arrested and that he attacked and assaulted the officers, who called for help from additional officers who arrived on the scene.
Felt said there was a “lengthy struggle” but officers eventually subdued Friese through the use of TASERs and were able to restrain him.
However, as he was being removed from the residence, Friese attempted to assault two additional officers.
There were no weapons used by Friese, according to the report.
One officer who was injured is a 28-year veteran of the Willmar Police Department. The unnamed officer was transported to Rice Hospital in Willmar for a head injury.
He was treated and released from the hospital last night.
Another officer, a six-year veteran of the Willmar Police Department, suffered a minor hand injury and was treated and released from Rice Hospital.
No other officers were injured.
Friese received minor injuries that did not require medical treatment.
Friese is currently being held in the Kandiyohi County jail.
Potential charges include fourth-degree assault on a police officer, which is a felony, and obstructing the legal process. He was also arrested on the court order violation out of Yellow Medicine County.
Willmar police were assisted by the Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota State Patrol and the Willmar Ambulance Service.
