Campus Police Chief Greg Hestness says the shooting happened outside Centennial Hall. The freshman student was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center. His condition wasn't immediately known.

Hestness tells WCCO radio the shooting happened minutes after two gunmen tried to rob two female students a block away. In both cases, two male suspects were seen.

Police are checking campus surveillance cameras as they investigate. No one is in custody.
