Jack Unger, 20, of Willmar is at home recovering from "substantial" injuries --the most severe a knee injury -- after a high-speed bike accident Sunday morning during the 8th annual Green Lake Triathlon.

Unger was about 1½-miles into the bike leg traveling over 20 mph when he collided head-on with a car at a hairpin turn at the end of the one-way stretch on Lake Avenue North.

Dr. Kevin Unger said his son hit the vehicle's windshield face-first. He was treated at the scene by emergency personal and transported by ambulance to Rice Hospital.

After spending two nights in the hospital, Dr. Unger said his son is walking with the help of an immobilizer but faces a lengthy rehabilitation. He will return to school this fall at the U of M Carlson School of Business.

In his first individual triathlon, he was among the top 15 out of the water in the Sprint swim.

"We're very grateful," said Dr. Unger. "We could have been dealing with a fatality."
