Update 2 p.m.: Benson High School wrestler dies after collapsing at summer camp
BENSON -- A Benson High School wrestler died Friday morning after collapsing following a training run while participating in a summer wrestling camp here, according to Benson school officials.
Miles J. Staton, 16, of Benson died Friday morning at Swift County-Benson Hospital here, according to school and funeral home sources.
Staton collapsed following a run during a summer wrestling camp in Benson, according to Benson Superintendent Lee Westrum and Benson Wrestling Coach Brian Knutson.
Staton had just completed his sophomore year as a Benson High School student and would have been a junior in the next school year.
The summer wrestling camp Staton was participating in is not affiliated with the Benson School District.
Officials at the Swift County-Benson Hospital, Swift County Sheriff's Office, Benson School District and Benson Police Department declined to provide further information Friday morning.
School officials said the district's crisis team will be meeting at 1 p.m. today and will be releasing more information after the meeting.
Police Chief Jim Crace was out of town and was said to be flying back for the 1 p.m. meeting. Superintendent Westrum had planned to be out of the office for the day but has also returned to the school and will attend the crisis meeting.
