MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -_ Barack Obama has won Minnesota, defeating John McCain to become the ninth straight Democratic presidential hopeful to take the state.

Obama's win gets him the state's 10 electoral votes.

He overcame a hard push by Republicans who saw hope in two close finishes in previous presidential races in Minnesota. The GOP nominee has lost the state in every race since Richard Nixon in 1972.

McCain had targeted Minnesota early on and the Republican Party brought its national convention to the state in September.

But after McCain drew close in September polls, Obama pulled away.
