Update: Cold persists across much of western Minn and the Dakotas

A hazardous weather out look remains in effect in Big Stone and Traverse counties in west central Minnesota, northwest Minnesota, northeast South Dakota and eastern North Dakota.

The National Weather Service said wind chill values in these regions will remain in the 15 below to 30 below zero range through this afternoon and evening hour.

The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls has issued a wind chill advisory for much of southwest Minnesota from 6 p.m. tonight until 9 a.m. Thursday.

The wind chill advisory area includes the counties of Lincoln, Lyon Murray, Cottonwood, Nobles, Jackson, Pipestone and Rock.

The wind chills values in those area will average 20 below to 25 below zero tonight, with expect wind speeds of 5 to 15 mph.

The extended forecast for the Willmar area is:

Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around -6. Wind chill values between -16 and -23. West southwest wind between 9 and 13 mph.

Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 21. Wind chill values between -7 and -17. West southwest wind between 10 and 14 mph.

Thursday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 13. West southwest wind between 7 and 9 mph.

Friday: A chance of snow and freezing drizzle. Cloudy, with a high near 30. West wind between 7 and 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Friday Night: A 20 percent chance of snow. Cloudy, with a low around 24.

Saturday: A 20 percent chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 27.

Saturday Night: A slight chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 17.

Sunday: A slight chance of snow. Cloudy, with a high near 21.

Sunday Night: A slight chance of snow. Cloudy, with a low around 5.

Update 9 a.m.: Wind chill warning remains in effect through noon in west central Minnesota

A wind chill warning remains in effect through noon in areas of west central, central and south central Minnesota and eastern South Dakota.

The National Weather Service said the wind chill warning area is generally along and west of a line from Staples to Litchfield to Fairmont.

A strong Arctic surface high pressure system is centered over the Dakotas and Nebraska this morning.

The combination of cold temperatures and wind speeds holding in the 10 to 20 mph range will drive wind chill readings down to the 35 below to 45 below zero range in the wind chill warning area.

The wind chill warning area in Minnesota includes the counties of Douglas, Todd, Stevens, Pope, Stearns, Lac qui Parle, Swift, Chippewa, Kandiyohi, Meeker, Yellow Medicine, Renville, Redwood, Brown, Watonwan and Martin counties.

A wind chill advisory remains in effect through noon for areas of east central and southeast Minnesota, including the Twin Cities metropolitan area.

Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around -5. Wind chill values between -15 and -25. West southwest wind between 9 and 14 mph.

Thursday: Partly sunny, with a high near 19. Wind chill values between -15 and -25. West southwest wind between 9 and 14 mph.

Thursday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 16. West southwest wind between 7 and 9 mph.

Friday: A 30 percent chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 29. West southwest wind between 7 and 9 mph.

Friday Night: A 20 percent chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 23.

Saturday: A 20 percent chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 27.

Saturday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 15.
