West central Minnesota is squarely in the middle of the area of heaviest snowfall in today's storm, according to the National Weather Service.

The heaviest snow is expected to fall south and west of Interstate 94 and north and east of the Minnesota River Valley.

A winter storm warning is in effect through midnight. Snowfall is expected to range from 5 to 8 inches, with more falling in some areas.

Blowing wind could cause visibility of less than a mile, and no unnecessary travel is advised. Those who do travel are urged to have food, water and winter survival gear in their vehicles.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation advises motorists to use extreme caution in southwest Minnesota due to heavy snow and reduced visibility when meeting vehicles.
