UPDATE: Victim in fatal crash near Regal ID'd
REGAL –– The victim of a fatal two-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon near Regal has been identified.
According to the Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office, David Andrew Mattson, 21, of Paynesville, was killed in the crash, which also injured two other men that were in the same vehicle.
Sgt. Eric Tollefson said the other two individuals were also from the Paynesville area. Their names have not been released.
The accident was reported at 4 p.m. Saturday on Kandiyohi County Road 2 and 270th Avenue Northeast, about two miles south of Regal.
The vehicles collided in a T-bone type accident and both vehicles ended up in a drainage ditch in about three feet of water.
The vehicles landed on their wheels.
According to Tollefson, the vehicles included a heavy-duty one-ton commercial work truck with a driver and two passengers, and a BMW four-door sedan.
No one in the truck was injured.
The three men in the BMW had to be extricated from the vehicle.
Authorities said the accident remains under investigation, with the State Patrol recreating the accident scene.
County Road 2 is a tar road where vehicles have the right-of-way in that area, while 270th Avenue Northeast is marked as a low-maintenance road with stop signs at the intersection.
Tollefson said the truck was going south on County Road 2 and the passenger car was traveling west on 270th Ave when the collision happened.
Agencies that responded to the scene included the Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota State Patrol, Paynesville Ambulance, Paynesville Fire, New London Fire, Willmar Ambulance, Kandiyohi County Rescue Squad and Life Link.
