USGA golf: Team Minnesota 12 over par after Day 1
GALLOWAY, N.J. -- Andy Jacobson of Willmar shot 77 matching the score of Team Minnesota teammate Matt Schneider at the USGA Men's State Championship being played at the Galloway (N.J.) National Golf Club.
At 12-over-par Team Minnesota is in a tie for 33rd place after the first round of the three-day tournament that feature three-man teams from each state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
North Carolina finished Day 1 in first place with a team score of 140.
The day's high score for each team is thrown out. For Minnesota, Jesse Larson, 37, of Shakopee shot 84.
Schneider, 24, is from Cohasset. Jacobson, 33, a member at Eagle Creek GC, is playing in his first national tournament. His father Joel, head pro at Eagle Creek, is caddy.
This is the 10th year for the tournament, which alternates with the women's team tournament. Each state selects is top amateur (non-collegiate) golf team to represent it.
The Galloway course, designed by Tom Fazio's firm, is considered an excellent test of a golfer's ability to use every club in his bag to advantage while managing his way around the heavily wooded seaside layout just south of Atlantic City.
