Varpness, Mooberry, Lindblad earn gold at state track

ST. PAUL -- Kendra Mooberry and Briana Wubben each medaled in four events and Melissa Varpness repeated her state title in the 800 run and added the runner-up medal in the 1600 at the Class A State Track and Field meet.

The athletes, fans and officials waded through a day-long but much-needed rain on Saturday at Klas Field on the Hamline University campus.

The wet track led to lost seconds in the finals compared to Friday's prelimaries held in full sun.

But few complaints were heard from the athletes, who performed spectacularly despite the chilly temperatures and slippery surfaces.

Mooberry, a senior for Benson/KMS, won the 300 hurdles, placed fifth in the 100 dash and ran on two medal-winning relays.

After two second-place finishes on Friday, Wubben ran in two races, one a relay, to take home four medals. The Central Minnesota Christian senior shared the family glory with her brother Aaron, a freshman, who high jumped a school-record 6-5 on Saturday in the field house to place second.

It was an impressive medal haul for a three-year old program whose "track" is the block in front of the school entrance in Prinsburg.

Kruiz Lindblad's first place in the long jump helped Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd place third in team points in the boys division. Lindblad soared 21-10, a remarkable jump considering the conditions. He finished seventh in the highjump.

Rachel Moser of Morris cleared 10-6 to take second in pole vault.

Ryan Swenson, a LQPV/DB sophomore, announced he will be a factor the next two years in the distant runs. The brother of Minnesota Gopher Nikki Swenson, who runs in the NCAA meet this week, took third in the 1,600 and fourth in the 800.

Emma Peterson, just an eighth grader at Benson, went home with a pair of fourth-place medals (800 run, 4x400 relay).

Tyler Jimenez of Paynesville ran two strong races on Saturday. He took second each time in the hurdle events while Justin Hanson of Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City finished third in the highs and fourth in the intermediates, a memorable finish for the Falcon senior after wavering off line and getting DQed with two others in the hurdles last year.

Litchfield had a good meet in the weights. Ryan Ackman in discus and Abby Goraczkowski in the shot put both finished second. Nate Walters was fifth in shot on Friday.

Linda Keller, a two-time champion last year, ran solid races but settled for second in the 3,200 on Friday and for fifth in the 1,600 on Saturday.

And for Sarah Sannerud, a Yellow Medicine East senior, her final race had a bitter ending. After qualifying top 3 in the 100 hurdles on Friday, she was running near the front when her trailing foot caught the last hurdle and she fell hard rolling to her back in the rain. She got up and finished, however, perhaps her heart broken but not her spirit.
