REDWOOD FALLS -- Vera Mae Luella Doidge, 77, of Redwood Falls died Saturday at an assisted living facility in Eden Prairie.

The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Redwood Falls. Burial will be in the Redwood Falls Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Nelson-Martin Funeral Service in Redwood Falls and for one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to the Redwood Area Hospital Foundation or Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.

She was born May 7, 1931, in Luck, Wis. to Niels and Maren (Olsen) Nielsen. Her father was a pastor and the family moved several times during her childhood. Her education began in Viborg, S.D., and continued in Clinton, Wis.; Laurel, Neb.; and Blair, Neb., where she graduated from high school in 1949. She attended the Immanuel School of Nursing in Omaha, Neb., graduated in 1952 and became a registered nurse.

She married Charles Doidge on Feb. 9, 1952, in Blair, Neb. They moved to Redwood Falls in 1956. She continued her career as a nurse, retiring 48 years later, on Jan. 1, 2005, at Redwood Area Hospital. During her career, she created the hospital's education department, the wellness program, the diabetes center, the cardiac rehabilitation program, the annual community baby shower for new and expectant parents and other programs.

She was recognized by the Jaycees, the Wheelock Whitney foundation, Gov. Rudy Perpich, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, the Redwood Valley Hall of Fame and the Redwood Gazette for her work in community health.

She was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, sang in the choir and taught release time and confirmation classes, Bethel Bible Study classes and Search classes. She also sang soprano in the Prairie Arts Chorale and was involved in the Redwood Concert Series.

She is survived by her husband; children: John (and Marlaine) Doidge of Glencoe, Debbie (and Duane) Meagher of Hopkins, Cindy (and David) Folin of Hopkins, Julie (and Carl) Huetteman of West Lafayette, Ind., and Jeff (and Lisa) Doidge of Austin, Texas; 12 grandchildren; and her brother: LeVern Nielsen of Racine, Wis.

She was preceded in death by seven siblings.
