Vernon Becker May 25, 1931 - May 12, 2013

CLARA CITY - Vernon Becker, age 81 of Clara City, died on Sunday, May 12, 2013 at Talahi Care Center in St. Cloud. Funeral service will be 2:00pm on Friday, May 17, 2013 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clara City. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Clara City.

Vernon was born on May 25, 1931 in Stoneham Township, Chippewa County, Minnesota, the son of Albert and Heilke (Dannen) Becker. He grew up in the Clara City area where he attended public school. He worked for four years for Andy Andresen on his farm. He enlisted in the United States Navy in September of 1951. He was stationed on the USS Parle DE 708 and received an Honorable Discharge on October 22, 1954. Vernon returned to Clara City in 1955 and began farming. He worked for two years for Berghuis Construction from 1971 to 1973. He continued farming until 1980 when he had open heart surgery. Vernon continued to work odd jobs for David Hovda and the Sugar Beat Plant.

He was baptized into his faith on August 20, 1934 and confirmed in January of 1951. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clara City where he served as an usher.

Vernon enjoyed golfing, bowling,, playing cards, watching his granddaughters play sports and watching sports on TV.

Vernon is survived by his two sons: Steven (and Joyce) of Terre Haute, IN and Bradley (and Linda) from Sauk Rapids; five grandchildren: Jennifer and Keith Becker, Holly, Cori, and Bailey Becker and one great- granddaughter: Analiese. He is also survived by one brother George of Clara City and two sisters: Emma Peglow of New Hampshire and Cora Heller of Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son David; four brothers: Herman and Fred and in infancy: George and Fred; sisters: Jeanette Herrmann and Martha Schwitters; three sisters-in-law and four brothers-in-law.
