SPICER -- Vernon Leroy Melbie, 84, of Brooklyn Center died Feb. 2.

The service will be in the spring in Spicer.

He was born Aug. 15 1924, in Spicer to Arthur and Ella (Ardoff) Melbie. He grew up in the Spicer and New London area. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946.

He married Ardis Jensen on Nov. 19, 1954. They lived in Kansas and northeast Minneapolis. He worked at the University of Minnesota heart hospital for 25 years as the senior building caretaker and also had a part-time job at Glenwood Hills hospital. They moved to St. Cloud in 1989 and to Brooklyn Center in 1997.

He is survived by his wife; children: Carolyn (and Daniel) Maher of Tennessee, Janice Martin of Ohio and Dale Melbie of Brooklyn Center; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a son: Larry Melbie; two sisters; and one brother.
