GROVE CITY -- Verrol Eugene Smith, 83, of Grove City, died Monday at the Meeker Memorial Hospital in Litchfield.
The service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grove City. Burial will be in the Burr Oak Cemetery in Union Grove Township with military honors by the Litchfield Military Honor Guard.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church and for one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are by the Johnson-Hagglund Funeral Home in Litchfield.
He was born Sept. 9, 1925, in Union Grove Township, Meeker County, to Cecil and Myrtle (Flanders) Smith. He attended School District 20. He entered the U.S. Marine Corps in 1945.
He married Joyce Johnson on March 16, 1947, in Grove City. He bought the family farm in Grove City. He farmed, drove trucks and shelled corn with his sons. He also worked in New London at the grain elevator and later worked for the Meeker County Highway Department. He had a sharpening and small engine repair service.
He was a member of the Crow River Methodist Church, Trinity Lutheran Church, the American Legion, the VFW, and the Farmers Union. He served on the Grove City Community Homes Board, the Burr Oak Cemetery Board and the Union Grove Township Board.
He is survived by his wife; seven sons: Bruce (and Beverly) Smith of Houston, Dale (and Barbara) Smith of Sacramento, Calif., Wade Smith of Orlando, Fla., Kent (and Diane) Smith of Atwater, Dean (and Cheryl) Smith of Grove City, Todd (and Goldie) Smith of Grove City and Scott Smith of Chaska; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters.
