VFW baseball: Willmar 1-2 over weekend
GLENWOOD — Willmar went 1-2 at the Starbuck Tournament Saturday and Sunday to place sixth.
Willmar opened by losing 9-2 to Albany Saturday morning, falling into the consolation bracket. Post 1639 then outlasted Paynesville 11-8 Saturday afternoon to reach Sunday’s fifth-place game, which they lost 13-4 to Sauk Centre.
Offensive leaders for Willmar were Garrit Kooistra and Noah Vreeman as both finished the tourney 4-for-10 and driving in a combined seven runs. Sam Vreeman and Noah Streed added three hits each.
Grant Bangen pitched into the fourth inning against Paynesville to earn the lone win for Willmar, which hosts Benson on Tuesday at Swansson Field at 6 p.m.
