ILLMAR -- A fire in the shop area of Arnold's of Willmar was extinguished by area fire departments Thursday evening.

The extent of the damage and the cause of the fire at the farm implement business were still unknown at 10 p.m. Thursday. The cause is under investigation, according to Willmar Fire Chief Gary Hendrickson.

The fire was first reported at 8:23 p.m. when smoke was seen coming from exhaust ducts on the roof, Hendrickson said.

Arnold's employees watching the firefighting efforts from a distance said the building has a number of firewalls that should have kept the fire from spreading.

Hendrickson said the partitions in the building did keep the fire contained to a shop area, where a utility truck was the apparent source of the fire.

No one was inside the building when the fire was reported, and no firefighters were injured in fighting the fire.

In addition to Willmar's Fire Department, departments from Blomkest, Spicer, Raymond, Kandiyohi, Pennock and Lake Lillian responded to the scene just outside the Willmar city limits on South Highway 71.

The other departments were summoned because of the size of the building and the thickness of the smoke when the first responders arrived.

While the fire damage appeared to have been contained to one area, "there's probably a lot of smoke damage inside the facility," Hendrickson said.
