Volleyball: Top-seeded BBE begins 6AA title quest with sweep of NLS

Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa, a section finalist two of the last three seasons, began a bid for another with a 25-9, 25-9, 25-17 victory over New London-Spicer in the quarterfinals of Section 6AA-North tournament Friday in Brooten.

BBE (25-2), the top-seed in the section, will next face No. 5 Eden Valley-Watkins, a four-game winner over Paynesville, a 7 p.m. Tuesday in New London.

Albany and Sauk Centre will meet in the other semifinal match at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Long Prairie.

BBE 3, NL-Spicer 0

April Hansen and Ashley Lensing both piled up 13 kills to help Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa limit New London-Spicer to nine points in each of the first two games.

Holly Thompson led the service game for BBE with five aces and also chalked up 32 assists while Tiffany Gruber had seven kills in 12 errorless attacks and a team-high 15 digs.

Brenna Thompsen and Katie Heinen both had five kills for the Wildcats (5-23).

EV-Watkins 3, Paynesville 2

No. 4 seed Paynesville (10-12-1) won the first game before Eden Valley-Watkins took the next two, including a 27-25 win in the third game. The Bulldogs then forced a fifth game, which the Eagles won 15-8.

Lynn Lieser had nine kills, Kristin Lang eight and Shonda Martinson six for Paynesville. Lieser had six ace blocks and Martinson five for the Bulldogs. Ashley Lieser served four aces and had 28 assists.

Eden Valley-Watkins was led by Krista Opheim with nine kills, 14 assists and three ace serves.
