BELGRAD - Walter A. Schwinghammer age 106, of Belgrade, died on Thursday, September, 26, 2013, at the Belgrade Nursing Home. His Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, October 1, 2013, at St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church in Belgrade. Interment will be at the church cemetery. A visitation will be held on Monday from 4-8:00 pm at the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade with a Christian Mother Rosary being prayed at 4:00 pm and Parish Prayers being prayed at 7:30 pm. The visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday morning.

Walter Anthony Schwinghammer was born on December 13, 1906, in St. Joseph, MN, the eldest son of Joseph and Mary (Nierengarten) Schwinghammer. He attended primary school at Holy Angels Catholic School in St. Cloud. He went on to attend Ag School at the University of Minnesota at Morris.

On April 24, 1941, Walter was united in marriage to Leona Hiemenz, at St. Anthonys Catholic Church in St. Cloud. This union was blessed with six sons and four daughters. The family began their life in the St. Cloud Area where Walter farmed. In 1947, they moved to the farm in Lake George Township near Belgrade. Walter farmed and milked his entire life. In 2010 he moved to the Belgrade Nursing Home where he lived until his death.

Walter was a member of St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church in Belgrade. He enjoyed volunteering for the Sausage Supper, driving members to and from church from the nursing home, and reading to the residents at the nursing home which he did well into his 90s. He also enjoyed reading, playing solitaire, and was the family champion at checkers, which he defended on the day of his death. Walter was proud to have voted in 21 presidential elections, and that he was able to renew his drivers license at the age of 100 and was still driving at 102.

Walter is survived by his wife Leona; children, Patricia Born of Waseca, Judith (Donald) Potter of International Falls, Dennis of Phoenix, AZ, Ann Temple of Concord, CA, David (Joyce) of Belgrade, Richard of Plymouth, Rose (Dan) Houk of Sauk Centre, Walter Jr. (Jackie) of Newark, AR, Anthony (Shirley) of Pueblo West, CO, and Allen of Belgrade; 30 grandchildren; 58 great grandchildren; and a great great granddaughter. He is also survived by his sister, Mary (Ray) Eveslage of St. Cloud; brother, Joseph (Louise) Schwinghammer of Luxemburg; sister-in-law, Elvira Mick of St. Cloud; and brother-in-law, Vernon Heimenz of Tucson, AZ.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents, two grandchildren, four brothers, two sisters, and three sons-in-law.
