WILLMAR — Strong winds and snow are on the way, leading the National Weather Service in the Twin Cities to issue a weather advisory for the Willmar and west central Minnesota area for this evening and into Sunday.

The combination of strong winds, light snow and cold temperatures will create the potential for blizzard-like conditions in the area starting after dark today, according to John Dlugoenski, a meteorologist with AccuWeather.

The Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s office issued a warning yesterday afternoon warning that wind gusts and blow snow will reduce visibility in open areas and make it difficult to travel.

The area should not see a lot of snow, according to Dlugoenski. The light snows will begin on the backside of a low pressure center that will be moving east out of Minnesota during the afternoon. A strong Arctic front will follow, bringing winds of 25 to 35 miles per hour, with gusts as high as 40 miles per hour.

The strongest winds are expected through the night time hours and into Sunday morning.

The Arctic air mass will bring sub-zero temperatures, with an expected low of minus 10 on Sunday morning.

Wind chill values of minus 25 to minus 35 degrees, possibly minus 40, are expected tonight and into the early morning Sunday.

Brisk winds through the afternoon Sunday will keep wind chill values in the double-digits below zero.

The National Weather Service advises that Friday’s mild temperatures helped form a crust on the snowpack, but there remains the potential for ground blizzard conditions with the strong winds tonight. Travel conditions will be difficult today and into Sunday.
