Prairie Woods ELC

Sibley State Park

Interpretive Center open during the week; call 320-354-2002 for hours.

Sibley State park programs are on the weekends at the Interpretive Center and are led by the park naturalist or visiting expert. A vehicle permit is required to enter the park and they are available at the park office. For more information call 320-354-2002.

Songs of the Forest: 9 a.m. Saturday; naturalist-led walk to various habitats to identify different bird songs and discuss the reasons for singing.

Fish features and facts: 10:30 a.m. Saturday; examine fish parts, fish life and Minnesota fish facts along with playing the Fish Facts Quiz; a kids/parents program.

Fiddlers "jam" session: 2 p.m. Saturday; join the Coffee Shop Fiddlers at the Interpretive Center as they have a little fun practicing and playing fiddle music, come listen and join in.

Bluebird conservation story: 11 a.m. Sunday; presentation about the bluebird and what you can do to help it survive and thrive.

Loon, Minnesota's state bird: 1:30 p.m. Sunday; have you heard the "wail" of the loon and wished you knew more about Minnesota's state bird? Discover the calls of the loon, its habitat, food requirements and family life.

Amazing Amphibians: 3 p.m. Sunday; Sibley State Park is a home for 10 of the 19 species of amphibians found in Minnesota. Learn about frogs, toads and salamanders.

Bald Eagle: 10:30 a.m. Monday;PowerPoint program examining the life, culture and history dedicated to our national symbol, the bald eagle, plus discover the bald eagles of Sibley.

Granite, Oak and Men: 2 p.m. Monday; the skillfully constructed buildings in Sibley were built by unemployed World War I veterans who lived and worked here from 1935-38. The park naturalist will use a slide show and talk to explore the work and lives of the men of Sibley's Three Bears Camp.

Lower Sioux Agency

The Lower Sioux Agency Historic Site is nine miles east of Redwood Falls on Redwood County 2. It is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and holidays and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for senior citizens, and $4 for ages 6-12. For more information call 507-697-6321 or check the Minnesota Historical Society Web site at www.mnhs.org.

Footprints of History: Join a guided tour which will offer insights into traditional Dakota culture; how the lives of the Dakota changed because of government policies and treaties; the role and purpose of the Lower Sioux Agency; how the Agency would have looked 150 years ago; and the events that led up to the U.S.-Dakota War. Tours begin at 11 a.m., 1 and 4 p.m. Saturday and Memorial Day, 1 and 4 p.m. Sunday.
