Wendell 'Gene' Gravlun

ALEXANDRIA -- Wendell "Gene" Gravlun, 77, of Alexandria and formerly of Benson, died Friday at Knute Nelson in Alexandria.

The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Calvary Lutheran Church, Alexandria. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Oak Hills Cemetery, Excelsior. Military honors will be provided by the Alexandria American Legion Post 87 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 936.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria.

He was born March 8, 1932, in Benson to Alfred and Avis (Sandstrom) Gravlun. He worked for the Great Northern Railroad and also on his uncle's farm. He graduated from Benson High School and attended Dunwoody Institute for woodworking. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954.

He married Blanche Underthun on Sept. 8, 1956, at Big Bend. They lived in Excelsior for 40 years. He worked for a few years for the Army Corps of Engineers on locks and dams. He worked as a carpenter in the Twin Cities area. He retired after 19 years of work with the Minneapolis Schools as a carpenter. He also worked as an usher and security guard for the Minneapolis Aquatennial and other events.

He is survived by his wife; daughter: Julie (and Tom) Flemming of Excelsior; son: Mark Gravlun of St. Bonifacius; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son: Lee Allen; a sister; and three brothers.
