BELGRADE -- Wenzel Harvey Erickson, 68, of Hastings, formerly of Belgrade and New London, died Saturday at Asera Care Center in St. Paul.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade. Memorials are preferred to Hospice.

He was born March 26, 1940, in Glenwood to Willis and Wanda (Medalen) Erickson. He grew up on the family farm near Sedan and later in Colfax Township. He attended country grade school in District 10 and Belgrade High School. He entered the Navy in 1957 and served for four years.

He lived in Long Beach, Calif., where he attended two years of junior college, receiving his journeymen's card as a machinist. He worked in California and Minneapolis-St. Paul as a machinist before returning to the area in 1974. He farmed and raised hogs before owning and operating Hawick Sinclair Filling Station in the mid-1980s and later working for New London Materials as a truck driver and heavy equipment operator. He retired in 2000.

He was a foster parent in the 1970s and '80s.

He is survived by his special friend: Lois Darrington of Hastings; and siblings: Darlene Birr of Belgrade, Charlie (and Luzette) Erickson of Belgrade, Kermit Erickson of Willmar, Bonnie (and Dale) Laidlaw of New London, Connie Peterson of Willmar and Dennis Erickson of New Hope.
