Wild night in the West Central
West Central conference rivals Paynesville, Benson, Montevideo and Sauk Centre played in two games Friday night that yielded a combined 180 points but which were decided by a total of just eight points.
Montevideo almost blew a three touchdown lead but held on to defeat Sauk Centre 48-46, and Paynesville scored a game-winning touchdown with just seconds remaining to down Benson 46-40.
The games featured sensational individual performances by several players, most notably Montevideo's Brett Bergeson, Benson's Matt Arndt, Paynesville's Josh Bungum and Sauk Centre's Roosevelt Austin.

PAYNESVILLE -- Josh Bungum's 7-yard scoring pass with about seven seconds to play lifted Paynesville to a wild win over Benson Friday night in both team's West Central South opener.
The Bulldogs covered 80 yards in just 40 seconds, capping the winning drive with Bungum's TD pass to Kyle Wolters.
The Bulldogs improved to 1-1 overall while Benson fell to 0-2.
Paynesville led 40-28 in the fourth quarter but the Braves' Matt Arndt - who accounted for almost 500 total yards -- threw two scoring passes to Logan Connelly to tie the game at 40 with less than a minute to play.
The Bulldogs blocked Benson point-after kick following Connelly's second TD to preserve the tie.
Thanks to having two timeouts remaining, the Bulldogs were able to keep the ball on the ground and they had great success doing so.
Bungum and Kyle Schmidt ran the ball four straight times to the Benson seven yard line. On the next play Bungum took the snap and found Wolters for the winning TD.
Benson was able to run one more play following the kickoff but Schmidt sacked Arndt to end the game.
Bungum did almost everything Friday, running for four touchdowns, throwing the winning TD pass, and scoring on an 83-yard pass play. Jason Kampsen, who threw to Bungum on the play, also ran for two TDs.
Arndt hit 15 of 25 passes for 280 yards and five touchdowns, and he ran for 209 yards and a TD on 22 carries. Connelly caught three TD passes and Sam Peterson snagged two TDs

Montevideo 48, Sauk Centre 46
SAUK CENTRE -- Montevideo let a three-touchdown lead slip away in the third and fourth quarters but hung on to defeat Sauk Centre on Friday night.
Monte's Brett Bergeson threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more to lead the T-Hawks, who improved to 2-0 overall.
Sauk Centre lost its second straight despite the efforts of Roosevelt Austin, who ran for 132 and scored six touchdowns.
Sauk Centre took a one point lead into halftime following a high-scoring first half, but Monte countered with two Bergeson TD passes and a scoring run to go ahead 48-27 in the third quarter.
"We scored 22 unanswered, I thought it was over," said T-Hawks' head coach Dave Vik.
But Monte turned the ball over on its next three possessions and the Mainstreeters turned the mistakes into three Austin TD runs to close the gap.
Bergeson hit 18 of 24 passes for 253 yards and the three TDs, and he ran for 45 yards and two more scores. Monte's Jake Douglas ran for 102 yards and a TD.
Austin ran for four scores and caught TD passes of 70 yards and 13 yards from Patrick Knoblauch.
