William Wallenta Jan. 15, 1905 - June 15, 2009
LAKE LILLIAN -- William A. Wallenta, 104, of Olivia, formerly of Lake Lillian, died Monday at the Golden Living Center in Olivia.
The service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Lake Lillian. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery at Bird Island.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at K-M Funeral Home in Lake Lillian, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., and for one hour prior to the service Friday at the church. Memorials are preferred to the Society for the Blind or the Alzheimer's Association.
He was born Jan. 15, 1905, on the family farm in Lake Lillian to Joseph and Anna (Bantz) Wallenta. He grew up at Lake Lillian, attended country school and St. George's Parochial Boarding School at New Ulm. He then assisted on the family farm.
He married Gladys Hopman on Oct. 13, 1934, in Olivia. They lived in Lake Lillian where he operated Bill's Café from 1934 to 1950. He then farmed for many years before retiring when his son, Jeff, took over. Gladys died in 1964, and he maintained his own home for many years, moving to the Bird Island Manor in 2000. In 2007, he became a resident of the Golden Living Center in Olivia.
He and Gladys were founding members of St. Thomas More Catholic Church where he was a trustee for many years. He was also a recipient of the New Ulm Diocese Bishop's Medal of Service
He is survived by his five children: William Jr. (and Judy) Wallenta of Lakeville, Pat (and Paul) Schmoll of Olivia, Kathy Wallenta of Minneapolis, Jane Laugen of St. Cloud and Jeff (and Mary) Wallenta of Lake Lillian; 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and three sisters: Sister Ann Lucille, CSJ, Lucille Thode and Leona Olson.
He was preceded in death by his wife; one brother and five sisters.
