Willmar advances Tinklenberg, relay

WILLMAR -- There was no telling who was more joyful on Saturday at the end of the Section 3A swimming and diving meet, Willmar senior Anna Fuglestad, who had punched her first ticket to the state meet, or classmate Alissa Tinklenberg, has been going every year since seventh grade.

"I'm so excited," said Fuglestad, who will swim the butterfly leg of the 200 medley relay. "I was so nervous (the last two days). We'd gone under the state cut on Thursday (in the preliminaries), but we had to do it again today. I've been swimming on the high school team five years and this was my last chance."

The Class A state meet swimming preliminaries begin Friday at noon at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center. It's a familiar setting for Tinklenberg, who has won 17 state medals and has a chance to finish with 20 after winning the 500 freestyle and the 100 backstroke.

But her last section meet and final home meet held special meaning, especially when it was announced that she was Co-Swimmer of the Meet with Hutchinson junior Audrey Kumm.

"I've never swam this well in section," Tinklenberg said. "I was really shocked. It's an honor to tie with Audrey considering she's a two-time state champion."

With four golds, Kumm led the Tigers to the team title by 181 points over runner-up Marshall.

In the pool's 15th season, new standards were set in 8 of the 11 events. Tinklenberg broke her own school record in the backstroke and set a 3A record in the 500 freestyle.

State veterans Emily Zondervan and Aleasha Blokzyl complete Willmar's state-qualifying relay.

Willmar coach Carl Shuldes said that nearly every one of his swimmers cut time from the prelims, but he singled out Tinklenberg, who swam in three of the final five events.

"She's special," he said. "That's a brutal stretch to do what she did today."

Orono, Litchfield and Willmar filled out the top five team. Litchfield will send five to state.

The Dragons' medley relay finished third and made the state cut, and sophomore diver Shelbie Walsh took third place. Eighth-grader Marissa Warren qualified in the individual medley and the butterfly, as well as swimming a leg on the qualifying relay.

Rick Loge shared Diving Coach of the Year Honors, a happy contrast to a year ago when he was in the hospital recovering from injuries resulting from a fall from a deer stand.
