Willmar asks that sump pumps be discharged outside, not into sewer system

WILLMAR -- The city of Willmar is asking all homeowners to stop discharging water from their sump pumps into the sanitary sewer system.

The discharge is stressing the city's sewer collection system and wastewater treatment facility, which is unnecessarily treating a high volume of clean water.

It is against city ordinance to discharge sump pump flows into the sanitary sewer. Anyone found in violation of the ordinance is subject to a $100 a day fine.

Homeowners are asked to route their sump discharge outside. The request includes homeowners who have a permit to discharge into the sewer system in March and November.
