Willmar Avenue Southwest project to begin Monday
WILLMAR — Construction will begin Monday on the Willmar Avenue Southwest project, city officials have announced.
The project will consist of constructing Willmar Avenue Southwest from 22nd Street Southwest to County Road 5 and construction of a new intersection at Industrial Drive Southwest.
The project also calls for construction of a quiet zone at the new BNSF railroad crossing.
Traffic will not be allowed in the construction zone. Traffic control, including detour signage, will be installed beginning Monday. Residents and motorists may encounter minor delays and are asked to follow the posted detour routes.
Motorists are advised to slow down for their safety and the safety of others. Construction is expected to be completed by Nov. 8.
The prime contractor for the $1,068,195 project is Duininck Inc. of Prinsburg.
Jared Voge, interim city engineer, said the primary goal of the project is to improve safety along Willmar Avenue and Industrial Drive Southwest and to open up the new industrial park for future development.
In addition, concrete medians will be installed at the BNSF crossing to further the quiet zone objective of the city. He said the medians will be similar to those installed earlier this year at the Trott Avenue Southwest BNSF crossing.
The quiet zone process includes approval from the Federal Railroad Administration before trains are allowed to withhold sounding the horn at the crossing.
