WORTHINGTON -- The Willmar boys soccer team scored on all five of its shootout attempts and goalie Charlie Trochlil made a save on a Worthington attempt to put the Cardinals into the third round of the Section 2A tournament.

Willmar's 2-1 victory on Thursday earned it a date with Fairmont, the section's top seed, on Tuesday in Fairmont. The Cardinals improved to 13-3-2.

Willmar and Worthington traded goals in regulation, then played to a stalemate through two 10-minute overtime periods.

In the shootout, Cardinals David Dominguez, Cesar Jimenez, Tim Rogers, Handerson Tevelan and Jose Hernandez put balls past Worthington goalie Ricardo Maldonado. Worthington scored on its first three shots but Trochlil stopped a shot by Worthington's Armando Echeverria. When Hernandez netted his shot, the celebration was on.

Trochlil was starting his second game in place of regular goalie Joaquin Espinoza, who has missed several games with an injury. Midfielder Remigio Becerra had been subbing for Espinoza but, in the playoffs, head coach Jeff Winter said he needed Becerra back on the field.

Trochlil, who first started in Willmar's first-round win over Hutchinson, stopped a point-blank Worthington shot during the game, he had a ball go off the post and then off him and he was able to clear the ball, and then he made the save in the shootout.

"We showed confidence in our backup goalie (Trochlil) and he's really come through," Winter said. "He's definitely my man of the match, although everybody could have been today. Everybody played great."

The flow of the game bypassed midfield often, Winter said, leading to frequent scoring chances for both teams. Both had good attempts saved or missed, and both teams had shots go off the goalposts.

"It was really a back-and-forth game," Winter said. "It really could have gone either way."
