Willmar cools off Wildcats
NEW LONDON -- Jim Neis of Willmar outlasted New London-Spicer's Alex Wiegmann in a three-set marathon Monday and the Cardinals topped the Wildcats 6-1 in a non-conference tennis match on Monday.
The match was played with the temperature at 37 degrees and wind gusts that made it feel like January instead of early April.
"It was brutal out there," said Willmar coach Loren Holter. "But for the first match of the season and the way things were out there, I was pleased the way we played. We haven't been outside very much."
Neis won 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 to lead Willmar's sweep of singles. Trent Fader, Mitch Fader and Evan Armstrong also won singles matches.
New London-Spicer's lone point came at 1-doubles where Logan Bengtson and Elijah Wilson won in three sets over Chris VanDoren and Ryan Sheehan.
Matt Horning and Aaron Sagedahl won 6-0, 6-0 at 2-doubles and Landon Peterson-Mark Dunham won 6-0, 6-1 at 3-doubles.
