Willmar Curling gets 2016 Junior Nationals
WILLMAR — The Willmar Civic Center and the Willmar Curling Club has been selected to host the 2016 United States Junior National Curling Championship, Civic Center manager Kevin Madsen announced Saturday.
This is one of U.S. Curling’s premier events featuring high school and college-age male and female curlers (ages 14-21).
Virtually all of the players competing at the upcoming United States Olympic Trials, at Fargo in November, will be past State or National Junior Champions.
It’s also possible, 2018 Olympic hopefuls would be curling in the 2016 Junior Nationals here.
Typically, 10 regions are represented by both the men and the women, similar to the Mixed National Championship held this past March at the Civic Center.
The juniors would be twice the size in numbers of the Mixed Nationals, Madsen stated.
Actual dates have not been selected but late January or early February is the usual time frame for the week-long championship.
