WILLMAR -- A good night at the charity stripe helped Willmar beat Alexandria in a Central Lakes Conference boys basketball game on Tuesday night.

On their home court, Willmar drained 26-of-31 free throws to help put away the visiting Cardinals 70-61.

The 84-percent clip was due to Jordan Smith (8 of 10), Taylor Filipek (6 of 7), Alex Saunders (5 of 6), Logan Birkland (4 of 4) and Brian Reeves (3 of 4).

Willmar may need that kind of accuracy again when it travels to St. Cloud on Friday to play the Tech Tigers, the CLC leader.

Alexandria kept it close in the second half, chopping Willmar's seven-point halftime lead down to as little as four points deep into the half.

"We kept attacking and hit free throws at the end," said Willmar coach Steve Grove. "We played better offensively than in the second half in a two-point loss to Montevideo on Saturday."

Smith finished with 19 points. Filipek scored 18, Reeves 11 and Saunders 10.

"Taylor (Filipek) and Alec (Saunders) did a good job attacking the basket in the second half," said Grove.

Conner Illies hit four 3-pointers in the first half and two more in the second half to finish with a game-high 24 points. Steve Conley added 17 points for Alexandria.

Alexandria (1-12, 3-13) was 0-for-1 at the free throw line.
