Willmar ends drought with win over Sauk Rapids
SAUK RAPIDS -- The Willmar boys hockey team made the most of the offense it generated, beating Sauk Rapids 4-1 in Central Lakes Conference action Friday and breaking a four-game losing streak.
The Cardinals (2-7, 5-9) had only 12 shots on goal in the entire game, but profited with a goal in each frame. Willmar had only two shots on goal in the first period.
What they lacked in offensive chances, the Cardinals made up with their aggressive play.
With only three penalties -- all on Willmar -- in the first two periods, the Cardinals ramped up the pressure, but also made six trips to the penalty box, including two game misconducts.
Because of the game misconducts, Gabe Amon and James Johnston will miss the Cardinals' game today against Hutchinson at the Civic Center.
But Willmar's defense made up for penalties, holding Sauk Rapids 0 for 6 on powerplay opportunities in the third.
Jay Bredberg scored the game's first goal, unassisted, just 2:33 into the first.
Rory Schneider gave Willmar the lead for good in the second period on an assist from Trent Fader.
Bredberg scored another unassisted goal with 1:53 left in the game, then finished the score with a shorthanded, empty net goal with 34 seconds remaining.
Ben Leitch faced 25 shots in goal, saving 24.
