Willmar finishes third in State True Team meet
MINNEAPOLIS -- The Willmar boys swimming and diving team took third place for the second straight year at the state Class A True Team meet Saturday.
Willmar collected 1,631 points. St. Thomas Academy won the team title with 2,076.5 points and Simley was second with 1,850 points.
The Cardinals had 13 top-10 finishes and five top-5 finishes. Steve Kluver took second in the 50 freestyle and the 100 backstroke, and Andy Johnson was second in the 100 freestyle. Two relay teams placed third: the 200 medley team of Kluver, Ben Saint, Johnson and Kyle Schmidt; and the 400 freestyle team of Schmidt, Ross Swartz, Kluver and Johnson.
"The boys, especially the younger boys, really stepped up," said Willmar coach Carl Schuldes in an email. The underclassmen really came through. The seniors did what they had to do by holding their top spots, but the younger swimmers all moved up several spots according to the seed times."
