Willmar foiled by Scarlets
WILLMAR -- In a match with section implications, the Willmar Cardinals were trumped by Mankato West 5-2 on Tuesday at the high school courts.
The Scarlets' victory will likely land them the No. 2 spot in Section 2AA, which seeds Saturday. Hutchinson, which spanked Mankato West 7-0 earlier, will get the No. 1 designation.
Willmar picked up one point in singles and one more in doubles. West won two of three matches that needed a tiebreaker.
After Jim Neis lost 6-2, 6-3 at 1-singles, Trent Fader outhit Asteway Adams 7-5, 6-4 at 2-singles. But Willmar's Mitch Fader and Evan Armstrong both would fall in three setters.
In doubles, Willmar's Matt Horning and Aaron Sagedahl dropped their first set to Matt McGreggor and Tyler Nibbe but took control starting in the second set for a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 win.
It's been a rough week so far for the Cardinals, who lost 7-0 to St. Cloud Tech on Monday. They'll try to turn it around in a Central Lakes Conference match at Brainerd on Thursday.
