The three losses are to teams off to a combined 11-1 start: 29-31 to Elk River (4-0), 28-35 to Rocori (3-1) and 13-40 to Bemidji (4-0). The Spuds led Rocori 28-21 and lost to the Elks on a last-second field goal. Like Sauk Rapids last week, Moorhead runs the wing-T but deploys multiple formations and some shotgun. The run may be their bread and butter but junior QB Aaron Lien threw for 158 yards on 14 of 23 last week.
With Alex Grove rushing for 101 yards and Alfred Richards 77 yards and 3 TDs, it's time to salute the work horses in the pits. Jr. Cass Herzog (6-0, 280) is at LT, Sr. Matt Cordes (6-1, 225) at RG, Jr. Josh Warne (5-10, 185) at C, Jr. Andrew Buchanan (6-4, 280) at RG and Jr. Bart Kerfeld (5-11, 195) at RT. Jr. Zech Streed (6-1, 185) comes in when a tight end is called for. Willmar whipped Sauk Rapids 34-14 last week with a consistent running game and excellent field position created by the defense and special teams. Finnish student Kristian Suves kickoffs wen for three touchbacks and two inside the 10, as well as two field goals (31 and 39 yards). Junior OLB Jordan Geurtz had a big game with 5 tackles (two for loss) and an interception. The defensive line stopped the Storm run with Herzog and Cordes at the tackles and Jason Gunvalson and Kenny Pachke at ends. Next week, Willmar holds homecoming and the Cardinal Pride HOF ceremony before hitting the road for two games.
