Willmar Football Week 6 Preview

Email

Sartell Overview

Sartell has losses to Class AAAA-ranked No. 3 Rogers and No. 4 Bemidji plus Class 5A St. Cloud Tech (4-1) and 4A Rocori (4-1). The Sabres scored an impressive victory in Week 3 beating Brainerd 8-3. The hub of the Sabres offense is quarterback Blake Guggenberger. Other threats include TB Eric McAfee and wide receiver Troy Monson. In Friday's 36-18 loss to Rogers (5-0), McAfee rushed for 147 yards with two short TD runs. Like Moorhead, the Sabres are a much better team than their early record would indicate.

Willmar Overview

On the field most of the second half, the defense seemed to run low on fuel as the Moorhead Spuds scored on four straight possessions on the way to a 56-35 win, the most points Willmar allowed since 2001. The Spuds showed 67-40 margin in plays run from scrimmage. The offense failed to make plays the second half and the overworked defense couldn't hold off the Spuds on third down, whether it was a pass or a run. "We couldn't get stops," said coach Jon Konold reflecting on the Moorhead surge. "Our offense couldn't find a rhythm the second half and when they didn't execute that put our defense right back on the field." Linebacker Zech Streed's two defensive TDs, if not a Cardinal record, almost certainly would tie the school record. He scored on a 40-yard fumble recovery and a 30-yard interception return on consecutive Moorhead possessions early in the third quarter that vaulted the Cards into the lead temporarily 35-27. Mitch Johannes, the other ILB, had a team-best 11 stops, 3 for loss. The first-year starter is having a big year totaling 42 tackles, 2 forced fumbles and two recoveries. He also plays on all special teams, which was his role as a junior. Konold adds that the offensive line continues to improve and play as a unit.
