Willmar girl elected Girls State governor
WILLMAR -- Rya Haglund of Willmar was elected governor of the American Legion Girls State gathering last week at Bethel College in St. Paul.
The Willmar American Legion will hold an open house in her honor from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at the legion.
Haglund is the daughter of Patricia Haglund and Wes Haglund of Willmar.
Haglund was elected governor from among 425 high school juniors from all over the state.
Students are chosen for the program based on their interest in government and current events, moral character, leadership abilities and academic achievement.
Girls State has a program operating in most states in the nation. Those chosen to attend spend a week of intensive study of local, county and state government processes. They demonstrate their leadership skills as they develop their own city, county and state governments following the laws of their state.
Two girls from each state are chosen to attend Girls Nation, a national government training program held in Washington, D.C.
