Willmar girls advance in 2A
WILLMAR -- The future and past accounted for all the goals as Willmar defeated Worthington 4-0 in the quarterfinal round of the 2A girls soccer playoffs Monday.
Senior Danika Sweazy, a four-year letterwinner, scored once in her final game at Hodapp Field. Ninth-grader Hannah Murphy tallied twice while seventh-grader Chloe Donoho got the game's first goal.
Those three make up the starting forward line for Willmar (4-11). Sara Kallhoff, another seventh-grade striker, had several good chances among the 37 shots that Trojan goalie Katy Russell faced.
"We moved the ball pretty well today," commented coach Doug Rossum.
Senior goalie Callie Nelsen, a two-time team MVP, stopped eight shots including a point-blank breakaway at 25:00 for the shutout.
Next in 2A, the No. 8 Cardinals meet No. 1 seed Lakeville South, the former Lakeville which split into two high schools.
Willmar ends its regular season at 4:30 p.m. today playing Brainerd at the high school's north field.
