Willmar girls ousted in 2A hockey
MANKATO -- Willmar's road to the state tournament ran into a roadblock on Saturday.
The Mankato West Scarlets won their 14th straight game in a 6-2 Section 2A win over the fourth-seeded Cardinals.
The No. 1 seed improves to 23-3, including a 7-6 win over Willmar in December. West now plays Hutchinson, which eliminated New Prague, last year's section winner, 3-1.
The Cardinals, who finish 8-19, put just 10 shots on goal.
But it was 1-1 after one frame on goals by Katy Kvasnicka of West and the Cardinals' Kayte Cole, a powerplay goal on a shot from near the crease.
Vanessa Loyd and Kvasnicka, again, scored to make it 3-1 after two.
It was 5-1 six minutes into the third period.
Taylor Sandberg put up Willmar's second tally later in the period.
Willmar goalie Baylie Young stopped 24 shots. Winning goalie Therese Coughlan made eight saves.
The Scarlets held Willmar's leading scorer Chelsey Wierschem without a marker. The senior forward finished her career with 95 goals.
The Scarlets last loss came on New Year's Eve, 4-3 in overtime to Silver Bay.
Kavasnicka and Vanessa Loyd had two goals each for West while Alyssa Black supplied a goal and three assists.
