ALEXANDRIA -- The Willmar Cardinals won a second thriller in a row, squeaking by Alexandria 74-72 in overtime on Tuesday night in Central Lakes Conference girls basketball.

Jena Thompson made two free throws with 10 seconds left in regulation to send it into overtime tied 67-67.

In overtime, Sara Kallhoff made a late layup for a one-point lead and then Willmar's Hannah Smith added a free throw for the final two-point margin.

Willmar stayed unbeaten at 4-0 in the conference and 9-0 overall. Alexandria (4-1, 6-3) dropped its first CLC clash.

"That was a huge win for us in the CLC," said Willmar coach Brad Atchison, whose team beat New London-Spicer in overtime a week ago. "We never gave up and beat a nice team."

Smith paced four Cardinals in double figures with 16 points. Kayli Gimse had a season-best 14 points, Alex Lippert 13, plus 10 rebounds, and Mariel Aamot 11. Smith cashed three 3-pointers.

Thompson's all-around game included five points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Kalloff's seven points were a season-high for her to go with three steals.

Willmar trailed 40-38 at half after holding Alex star Angela Christianson to three points. The 6-foot senior guard would finish with 15 points. Kate Gearman led the home team with 18 points.

Down 67-65 Willmar was going for the tying shot when Thompson was fouled. She made both ends of the pressure-packed one-and-one.

After Smith's free thorw made it 74-72, Alexandria still had time (4.9 seconds) but Willmar stole the ball before Alexandria could get off a shot.
