Willmar holds off Marshall in Legion baseball
MARSHALL -- Willmar Legion withstood a ninth-inning rally to top Marshall 7-5 on Wednesday.
The two teams could meet again in the District 7 playoffs which are scheduled for July 24-26 in Spicer.
Willmar led 7-1 entering the bottom of the ninth.
It was a weird finish in which Willmar starting pitcher Jordan Smith would both get four strikeouts and allow four consecutive singles before the four-run rally was snuffed out.
Willmar built a six-run lead partly on Smith two-run homer in the sixth and a two-run single from Austin Adamson in the seventh.
Smith fanned the first two Marshall hitters he faced in the ninth, but the second reached on a catcher error. Another batter reached on an error, but Smith whiffed the next batter for the second out.
Back to wall, Marshall got four consecutive RBI hits and had the tying run on first. But the Willmar right-hander got the final out on a strikeout, his 11th against two walks and nine hits by eight different Marshall hitters. One run was earned of Smith.
Clay Ellis, the Marshall, starter, went the first 6Zc innings when he was chased by Adamson's single. Ellis took the loss.
Logan Birkland and Smith both had doubles among Willmar's six hits.
Willmar (11-8) plays at New Ulm on Saturday evening to conclude the schedule for Post 167.
