Willmar hoops team garners gold at Special Olympics

MINNETONKA -- The Willmar Cardinals went 3-0 at the Minnesota Special Olympics Basketball Tournament held at Minnetonka High School Saturday and Sunday to win the gold medal in the full-court division.

The Willmar Twins (2-1) took third in their half-court division and the Willmar Wildcats (1-2) were fourth in theirs.

Named the team MVP's were Daniel Dobransky, Twins; Ashley DeFlorin, Wildcats and Corey Fordham, Cardinals.

At the banquet, hosted by the Willmar Elks Club on Tuesday, athletic letters were awarded to Mandy Lush, Cody Sommerville, DeFlorin and Dobransky.

Playing their last season with the Willmar High School program were Sarah Nelson, James Wentzlaff, Paige Marquardt and DeFlorin.

Head coach of the Willmar squads is Todd Paffrath, who finished his 15th year.
